Virtual Pitch Logo Insertion

Fanview successfully pitches new innovation for Guinness PRO14 match branding

Combining our love of technology with our willingness to challenge and modernise traditional workflows, we joined Diageo and their activation partners, Verve The Live Agency, in looking for a new way of delivering on-pitch match logos.

With there being demonstrable disadvantages to the current method of painting branding on to the pitch surface, we proposed a fully-digital, virtual alternative using optical tracking.

Having successfully produced two trials of the technology with TG4 and BBC Wales, we moved on to delivering a virtual centre pitch logo at a live outside broadcast in Cork for Sky Sports with no incidents.

Our approach

Having been approached by Verve on behalf of Diageo to tackle this issue, we scoped our solution with trusted partner, Vizrt, using their optical tracking system, Viz Arena.

As it does not use a mechanical head attached to broadcast cameras, this enabled us to implement the technology on site with minimal disruption to the outside broadcast.

Once our technology solution was in place, we checked whether there were any compliance issues with our lawyers, liaised with PRO14’s partner broadcasters and submitted a series of graphic designs to be used during matches.

Having successfully trialled the technology on two live rugby union matches, we travelled to Irish Independent Park for a live broadcast of Munster v Ospreys, receiving great reviews of our service from the producers of Sky Sports’ coverage.
